What is the Joisel Award?

The Awards

Every year, eight artists in various fields of origami will be awarded for their outstanding achievements in the last year.

The awards are:

  1. The Artistic Award
  2. The Technical Award
  3. The Folding-Process Award
  4. The Interpretation Award

Two fields:

  1. Figurative
  2. Abstract

The Artistic Award

What is art? There is no accepted definition to this term, and still, the MOMA keeps a million objects that answer to some criteria in its storage rooms. This award will be given to the most expressive work of art that does not just try to imitate a figure, but to convey a message, tell a story, and achieve artistic heights.

The Technical Award

Boundaries are meant to break. This award is for an artist who expands the barriers of the technique with exceptional results.

The Folding-Process Award

For outstanding sequences, pushing the limits while keeping both an incredible elegance and folding pleasure.

The Interpretation Award

Like with music, the performance is as important as the score. This award will be given to a folder that executed a model beyond just following the diagrams.

Rules and Definitions

Works should NOT be older than one year on 1/8/2023.

All nominations must include

  1. Descriptive text and explanation of what makes the model worthy of winning (we will use this text as part of the nomination)
  2. High-quality images - no less than 300 KB and no more than 2 MB!!
  3. Images should not convey who the creator is, as well as the descriptive text! The voting is anonymous!!
  4. For the Artistic Award - Work must be folded by the creator!
  5. For the Folding-Process award - folding instructions, either by diagrams or a video tutorial.
  6. For the Interpretation Award - work must be folded by anyone but the creator!

The Artistic Award

What is art? There is no accepted definition for this term, and still, the MOMA keeps a million objects that answer to some criteria in its storage rooms. This award will be given to the most expressive work of art that does not just try to imitate a figure but conveys a message, tell a story, and achieve artistic heights.

Some questions one should ask himself while judging art are:

  1. Can I identify quality in the work? Of course, quality is just as hard as art to define.
  2. Will I consider it artistic even if it was not folded paper? Does the figure itself create the effect, or is it dependent on the fact it is a folded paper? What would the common person say (unaware of the technique)?
  3. Does this work evoke any emotions in me? Does it tell a story?
  4. Is the chosen paper suitable for the work and its story?

The Technical Award

This award is for an artist who expands the barriers of the technique with exceptional results.

This award is about taking known techniques and expanding the possibilities you can reach by using them, without compromising artistry, keeping it on a high level as well.

Another way to win is by creating a new technique whatsoever.

Complexity is one axis you can measure technical achievements, but it's not the only one. The efficiency of the design, using less paper to show more details, for example, is another axis. You can also simplify a known process, yet improve the results.

The Folding-Process Award

For outstanding sequences, pushing the limits while keeping both an incredible elegance and folding pleasure.

One way to measure the folding process is the difficulty level - if it stays simple but you get impressive results.

A unique step can be another way to impress, like Unsink, or a collapse that has a Wow! moment.

Making an enjoyable process will get more points.

Examples of stand-out steps:

  1. Pure-folds (just valley folds) that create an impressive result.
  2. Tessellation that only asks for grids (no precreases)
  3. Strong locks for modulars
  4. An amazing collapse phase in tessellations

To apply for this award you must submit instructions (diagrams or a video tutorial)

The Interpretation Award

This artistic award is for folders that did not create the model.

Like with music, the performance is as important as the score. This award will be given to a folder that executed a model beyond just following the diagrams.

Interpretation means taking the model further from the technical process the diagrams portrait. We do NOT look for a replica of the original.

Some elements that should make the interpretation more vivid are:

  1. The chosen paper - how does it suit the model? Does it have aesthetic values? Does it complement the design?
  2. How far away was the interpretation? Can we still recognize the original model? Was it changed enough to be an interpretation and not a replica of the original design?
  3. For figurative models - how is the posture of the model? Does it tell a (new) story?

The Team
