Mantarraya voladora

This is my first creation since 2019.

Since I started folding, I always thought that I needed very technical knowledge to create an original figure, but one day I decided to take a piece of paper and fold it experimentally, using some familiar bases and trying to combine or change them. It all started with a half preliminary base and a half bird base, an extremely basic figure and probably used many times for manta rays. So I started playing with the blintz base, to extract more paper at some point. In the end, it wasn't a blintz base, but it was part of that idea. Those extra pieces allowed me to extend the paper further, and new points appeared.

The surprise came when, in one of those repetitions, a smaller preliminary base appeared, allowing more points to be released and carrying on the same principle as when I started, but this time it wasn't for the body of the manta ray, but for the lower details. In the process, the paper broke due to the accumulation of layers, becoming more difficult and uncomfortable to work with, so many layers = sandwich paper. By using sandwich paper, I was able to achieve my goal and stylize it more, giving the body curves, slimming the lobes and tail, and curving the dorsal fin.

Later, I looked for many manta rays to see if the model already existed, but it did not. That's when I knew for sure that I had created my first origami figure experimentally.
