More than 10 years ago, I designed a few circular models and getting smooth surfaces was never simple. For this eye model, I went with a corrugation style surface, allowing for a much easier folding process as well as a nice appearance for the iris. Just like a real eye, the shape is of a stlightly flattened sphere. Finding this shape was a simple matter with the help of Oriedita software
To get a mostly-closed eye, I went with an unusual structure where the center of the paper is on the back of the model. The paper is locked on two places, but there is a single opening: the pupil. Having a hole on this precise location allows to get black as a third color. It is possible to insert additional papers where the layers overlap on the locks. In this case, I added a thin rectangle for the optical nerve. This model was folded using good ol' kraft paper.
