Box lid malfunction.
I was pleased with a variation of a box I discovered recently which offers an unusual and easy closing method I'd never seen before. It consists of folding 3D triangular wedge shapes on 4 flaps which then meet in the centre to form a tightly closing lid.
Disappointment soon came when I realised that the lid takes up most of the volume of the box so you can't put anything in it!
I was determined to find away to increase the volume of the box to make it usable.
The original was folded on a 8 x 8 grid so I increased the grid to 12 x 12 and folded the same flap crease pattern at each corner. This gave me more paper at the centre to form a deeper box.
I'm unhappy with the result as the new box is unattractive and reminds me of a portable toilet, the type you see at outdoor festivals.
Was the reworking worth it? Should I keep the easier to fold original variation with its clean lines and pleasing shape and just call it an impractical box?
Below is a link that shows the closing mechanism.
