Square kufic tessellation: T(he_art) of paper folding

This is a design from 2023 which I am pulling from the shelf again here because it fits the topic.

Square kufic is an ancient, highly abstract style of Arabic calligraphy that follows very stringent layout rules under which a line of pixelated text must be arranged in a spiral composition so as to fit perfectly into a given outline (see attached link to "More information about square kufic"). The golden inscription formed by this 3d tessellation constitutes a square kufic representation of the Arabic phrase

فن طي الورق

which translates into "The art of paper folding". Because "The art" contains a string of characters that form the word "heart", the outline of the square kufic design was chosen to resemble a heart. The model thus alludes to both "The art" and "The heart" of paper folding.

Folded from a 70 cm x 70 cm sheet of copper Elephant Hide. Elevations painted with golden acrylic.
