About Chris
Chris Palmer is a Fine Artist who has specialized in traditional and modern geometric art, ornament, textile design and folding. He is currently GIS Visualization Lab manager at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at UC San Diego. Chris enjoyed origami from childhood through college. After college studies of traditional tilings in the Alhambra led to a desire to express these patterns as folds in paper. With the help and inspiration of Jeremy Shafer, Shuzo Fujimoto, Tomoko Fuse, Toshikazu Kawasaki, Makoto Yamaguchi and Jun Maekawa in 1994 this was accomplished. In 1995 he developed a novel technique for folding these paper tessellations in fabric and has published a book called Shadowfolds about it with his co-author Jeff Rutzky. A second book, Shadowfolds Further, is in progress.
