Realistic origami snakes are usually achieved by folding long strips of paper or by adding tesselated scales when folding from a square.
In this model, to avoid using a non-square sheet and time-consuming pre-creasing, I used a simple waterbomb base with 3 open-sinks to get four long flaps united in the middle, then I added simple pleats in a linear orientation and united two corners to shape the body. The result is an elegant, realistic snake that efficiently uses paper and time.
