This is the latest in a sequence of attempts I've made to emulate the form of a particular abstract basket by a Japanese bamboo artist. I never come close, but this one works on its own reasonably well. It is also a pureland fold (only simple pleats) except for the final shaping, which uses only the remaining two precrease lines left unfolded after the pleating process, namely the diagonals of the original square. The model seems like it could actually be used as a light basket in practice, and is one of the most complex pureland folds I am aware of. The folding process is elegantly simple, if exhausting and physically difficult.
