T(he_art) of paper folding

This work combines three art forms - origami tessellations, square kufic calligraphy, and verbal play - in a novel way.

Square kufic is an ancient, highly abstract style of Arabic calligraphy that follows very stringent layout rules under which a line of pixelated text must be arranged in a spiral composition so as to fit perfectly into a given outline (see http://kufic.info). The golden inscription formed by this tessellation constitutes a square kufic representation of the Arabic phrase

فن طي الورق

which translates into "The art of paper folding". Because "The art" contains a string of characters that form the word "heart", the outline of the square kufic design was chosen to resemble a heart. The model thus alludes to both "The art" and "The heart" of paper folding.
