The Crawford Orchid Challenge
30ish years ago when JC produced “Creating Origami” he was in contact with Patricia Crawford and as a part of his reproducing some of her models in his book he agreed to in time produce a retrospective of her entire body of work and as a part of that agreement she agreed to transfer the rights to ALL of her models to him.
10ish years ago when he re-released “Creating Origami” he took up the project again and made some progress on the project but due to the scope it has been on and off the shelf for the past decade or so. This collection comprises 45 models of which about a third have already been re-diagrammed by JC.
The Crawford Orchid is a brilliant, previously unreleased model that JC has gone through the process of re-diagramming and re-engineering the folding process for over the past decade. The model is not trivial to fold but not lengthy (< 1 hour) just a challenging model.
One of the wonderful things about the piece (other than how far ahead of its time it is) is how rich it is as a “base” for the creation of other orchid/flower variations. For example, Romain Pauchet created the variation seen in the Additional Images area while testing the diagrams.
The Challenge
Currently, the model is ready to go but JC’s wants to open up an origami challenge to known (and unknown) creators to invent their variations of the model. Starting from the existing diagrams and departing at some point to create a variation of the model.
The inventor of the variation could then submit photos of the result and the best would be selected to be included in the book of diagrams soon to be released for print. The best of the best would be selected to be included on the actual cover of the book. At the option of the creator, they could also provide either photo step-folds (preferred) or a link to a published video showing the variation portion of the given variation ( not the entire folding sequence ). This could be a fun challenge and celebration of Crawford’s work and a way to get some recognition in the origami community.
Images must have a clean, monochrome background, and a resolution of at least 2MB. Besides uploading the image here, please send the files to lapinpub@aol.com.
The challenge deadline has been extended until the end of April!
