Agony in the Garden

“And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” Luke 22:43–44, ESV

Agony in the Garden explores one of the most profoundly human moments in the Passion of Christ: Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, where anguish, obedience, and divine purpose converge. Inspired by Luke 22:43–44 and an 1898 painting by Danish artist Frans Schwartz, the model seeks to express both vulnerability and transcendence through paper alone.

Designed by Brandon Wong, whose composition establishes the relationship between Christ and the angel. Through advanced shaping and finishing, I brought the model to life, focusing on emotional clarity—particularly the strain in Christ’s face and the quiet compassion of the angel’s presence. The work reflects the dual nature of Christ as fully human and fully divine, demonstrating how origami can communicate narrative depth and spiritual contemplation with precision and restraint.
